Interior vs Exterior Detailing: What Is the Difference and Which Do You Need?

October 11, 2026 5 min read SGFDetailing

Most people booking a detail for the first time hit the same question on the booking page: interior, exterior, or both? The packages are priced differently, they take different amounts of time, and they solve completely different problems. Picking the wrong one usually means paying for work your car did not need while the thing that actually bothers you goes untouched.

Here is exactly what each one covers, how to tell which your car needs, and when booking both together is the better deal.

The Short Answer

Interior detailing cleans everything inside the cabin: carpet, seats, dash, door panels, vents, and interior glass. Exterior detailing cleans and protects everything outside: paint, wheels, tires, and exterior glass. Book interior if the problem is smell, stains, crumbs, or pet hair. Book exterior if the paint feels rough, looks dull, or water no longer beads. Book both if it is both, since a full detail costs $60 less than booking them separately.

What an Interior Detail Includes

An interior detail is a deep clean of every surface you touch, sit on, or breathe around. A real one goes well past a vacuum and wipe-down:

  • A thorough vacuum of carpet, seats, crevices, and the trunk
  • Hot-water extraction of the carpets and floor mats to pull out embedded dirt and salt
  • Steam cleaning of door panels and the console, plus an air-blow of vents, crevices, and seat tracks
  • Cleaning and conditioning of leather, vinyl, and plastic trim
  • Odor treatment at the source rather than a fragrance over the top
  • Headliner spot treatment and interior glass on every window

Seat extraction and pet hair removal are common add-ons for cloth seats and shedding pets. Our interior detailing page has the full checklist. It starts at $180 for a sedan and takes about three hours.

What an Exterior Detail Includes

An exterior detail is a careful clean and a layer of protection, not just a wash:

  • A pre-rinse and two-bucket foam hand wash that avoids swirl-causing brushes
  • Iron remover and clay bar to lift bonded contamination a wash cannot reach
  • Deep cleaning of wheels, tires, and wheel wells
  • Exterior glass cleaned and sealed
  • A hand-applied synthetic paint sealant that protects for three to six months

The clay bar step is the one people underestimate, and our guide to what a clay bar does explains why. The exterior detail starts at $100 for a sedan and takes about an hour and a half.

Interior detailing fixes what you notice. Exterior detailing protects what you will be selling one day.

Which One Does Your Car Need?

Book an Interior Detail If

  • The car smells stale, musty, or like the dog
  • There are stains on the seats or carpet
  • Crumbs, sand, or pet hair have taken over
  • The carpet feels stiff or crunchy, often from winter salt
  • The inside of the windshield hazes over

Book an Exterior Detail If

  • The paint feels gritty after a wash
  • Water sits flat instead of beading
  • The wheels are caked with brake dust
  • Sap, bugs, or road film will not come off with a normal wash
  • It has been more than six months since the paint had any protection

Book Both If

You checked boxes on both lists, you are selling or trading in the car, you just bought a used one, or it is the start of winter or spring. A full interior and exterior detail starts at $220, which is $60 less than booking the two separately, and takes about four hours in one driveway appointment.

A Note on What Detailing Is Not

Neither package includes paint correction, which is machine polishing to remove swirl marks and scratches you can feel with a fingernail. That is a separate specialty service we do not offer, and we would rather say so than sell you a detail expecting it to do something it will not. What an exterior detail does do is remove contamination and add protection, which makes paint look noticeably deeper and glossier.

How Often to Book Each

Most daily drivers do well with a full detail every three to four months, sooner with kids, pets, or a lot of highway miles. Some people alternate: an exterior every couple of months to keep protection on the paint, and an interior whenever the cabin needs it. Our guide to how often to detail your car walks through the schedule. Full pricing by vehicle size is on the services page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between interior and exterior detailing?

Interior detailing deep cleans the cabin, including carpet extraction, seats, dashboard, vents, trim conditioning, odor treatment, and interior glass. Exterior detailing hand washes, decontaminates, and protects the outside, including paint, wheels, tires, and exterior glass, finishing with a paint sealant.

Is interior or exterior detailing more important?

It depends on the problem. Interior detailing matters more for comfort, smell, and health, especially with kids or pets. Exterior detailing matters more for long-term value, since protected paint ages far better through Missouri sun and road salt. If you can only do one, fix whichever is bothering you now.

How much does interior and exterior detailing cost in Springfield, MO?

Our exterior detail starts at $100 and our interior detail at $180 for a sedan, with larger vehicles priced by size. A full interior and exterior detail starts at $220, which saves $60 compared with booking both separately. There is no travel fee and no deposit.

Does exterior detailing remove scratches?

No. An exterior detail removes bonded contamination and adds a protective sealant, which can hide very fine marring and make paint look glossier. Scratches and swirl marks you can feel need machine polishing, a separate paint correction service we do not offer.

How long does a full interior and exterior detail take?

About four hours for a sedan, longer for large SUVs, trucks, and minivans, or for vehicles in heavy condition. An exterior detail alone takes about an hour and a half, and an interior detail about three hours.

Still not sure which one? Start a booking and tell us what bothers you about the car. We will recommend the right package, even if it is the smaller one.
